SSAFA’s 13 Bridges Challenge returning for the charity’s 140th anniversary
07 January 2025
Join SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity on 28 June 2025 to celebrate Armed Forces Day 2025 in true military style with a unique (and award winning) walking event: The 13 Bridges Challenge.
The 2025 challenge will take place between the 80th anniversaries of V-E and V-J Day, days that marked the end of World War II in the European and Pacific theatres. It also marks 140 years since the inception of SSAFA itself. The challenge is an timely opportunity to honour those who gave their lives eight decades ago, as well as those who have dedicated their lives to service since.
The challenge follows a 10-mile route through London, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities (as well as a few dogs) to show appreciation for our military community and all they do for us. The route covers 13 of London’s most iconic bridges, staffed by Military Event Marshals and SSAFA volunteers to show you the way and chat about their roles in the Armed Forces.

Hannah Siddle, SSAFA Challenge Events Manager said: “The 13 Bridges Challenge is one of our most popular events. SSAFA couldn’t pull it off without the support of our corporate partners, supporting sponsors and everyone who takes part. We’re beyond grateful for their support of the challenge and our charity.”
Start times for the event are staggered every nine minutes between 8am and 1pm, and can be chosen depending on the most suitable time slot for you. If you would like to walk with friends or family, please ensure you all book onto the same start time.
Hannah added: “One of the best things about the challenge taking part in London is memorable occurrences happening all around the route. Some walkers get to see Tower Bridge rising to let ships through, while another year walkers spotted scenes being filmed for a new action film!
“After criss-crossing around London, the finish line will feature a roaring cheer-squad celebrating your incredible achievement, and is well-stocked with food, entertainment, and the chance to learn more about our Armed Forces while taking a well-earned rest.”
Ian Haberfield, who took part last year, is already looking forward to this year’s event: “The 13 Bridges challenge is incredible! It’s well-run from start to finish, plus I got to walk with my son so he can get the sense of pride that I get for raising money for our Armed Forces. As a single dad we built up a great bond and will turn this into an annual event."
