Record breaking fundraising at RAF Brize Norton

15 August 2023

The military community at RAF Brize Norton has raised a whopping £8,500 for SSAFA at an all-ranks darts event. The entertaining evening included an appearance from Coronation Street actor, Antony Cotton, and also Rob Coombes, of 90’s sensation band “Supergrass”, plus famous darts players, Jose de Sousa, Dimitri van den Bergh and Damon Heta.

The money was raised in order to support the Community Connection Champion project, which is designed to alleviate loneliness and isolation for military families and personnel.

Antony Cotton said of the event: “The F in SSAFA is the most important – Families. Being an Ambassador for SSAFA has changed my life, seeing the good they do in serving communities and for families. It is such an important cause.”

Projects such as music workshops, a music hire store, bowling, an art club, and a comedy night will be run on the camp due to the extra funding.

Flight Sergeant Lloyd Reade, who co-ordinated the event said: “Recently we lost a great colleague, Cpl Scott Robinson, after a long battle with cancer. SSAFA supported him and his family throughout, so it’s a charity close to our hearts and we wanted to help raise funds to help them to support our Unit and families, who are pivotal to operational output. Without the families’ support, we would not have the operational success that we do.”
