Parliamentary debate on Lord Etherton’s independent review into the treatment of LGBT veterans
11 December 2024
Tomorrow (Thursday, December 12, 2024), a Parliamentary debate on Lord Etherton’s independent review into the treatment of LGBT veterans will take place.
In advance of this, Lieutenant General Sir Andrew Gregory, the CEO of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity commented:
“Lord Etherton’s 2023 review into the wrongs done to members of the Armed Forces who were discharged, very often with disgrace, before the ban on lesbian and gay persons serving in the military was lifted in 2000 highlighted the scars still carried by those individuals.
“One of the key challenges is how you make some sort of financial reparation for loss of earnings and to the damage inflicted.
“While money can never undo well over two decades of hurt and shame, Parliament, on behalf of British society, has a chance this week to address this by agreeing a significant financial package that will go some way to putting substance behind the Prime Minister’s words of ‘We are sorry for what occurred’.”
