Glasgow’s Veterans United

Glasgow’s Veterans United (GVU) is a weekly walking football group for veterans living in the Glasgow area. It’s run by Glasgow’s Helping Heroes and the Rangers Charity Foundation.
Each Tuesday morning (during school term time), veterans take part in one hour of walking football led by Rangers Community Coaches. After the game, there's time for tea, coffee, and a friendly chat. You can also learn about the support available from Glasgow’s Helping Heroes.
GVU is open to all veterans—no matter your age, gender, time served, or how long ago you left the Forces. You don’t need to be fit or have played football before. Just turn up and join in!
Inclusive Curling
Our Inclusive Curling sessions are open to veterans of all abilities, including those living with physical or sensory disabilities. The sessions are fully accessible and designed so that everyone can take part, no matter their experience or mobility level.
Curling is a great way to stay active, build confidence, and meet others in a relaxed and supportive environment. It’s a sport that encourages teamwork, focus, and fun.
We work closely with the Stirling Veterans Curling Group, and a few times a year we get together for friendly matches—either in Glasgow or Stirling. These friendly games are a great way to enjoy the sport, catch up with others, and feel part of a wider community.
Apart Not Alone
Apart Not Alone (ANA) is a weekly group for naval spouses and partners of those currently serving at HMNB Clyde. It takes place in Helensburgh’s Drumfork Community Centre and offers a relaxed, friendly space to get support.
Being part of military life can be tough—especially when your loved one is away. These sessions give you a chance to talk, have a cuppa, and feel part of a supportive community. Children are welcome too.
Each week, we cover helpful topics like:
- Coping with separation and deployment
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Education and childcare
- Jobs, housing, and money advice
Whether you’re looking for friendship, advice, or just a break, Apart not Alone is here for you.
Sleep Well
Sleep Well is a suicide prevention outreach service for veterans in Glasgow. It’s here to help those who are struggling and may not feel ready to ask for help.
We go out into the community and meet veterans in places where support is most needed. These include:
- Scottish Veterans Residences (every week)
- Erskine (every week)
- Simon Community Hub (every two weeks)
- Glasgow City Council’s Homeless Team (every week)
- HM Prison Barlinnie (once a month)
We also support veterans who are sleeping rough or not linked in with any services.
Sleep Well gives 1-to-1 support based on each person’s needs. This can include help with:
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Finding safe housing
- Getting a job or training
- Money and benefits
Our aim is to make sure no veteran is left behind. We want every veteran to feel supported and know there’s someone on their side.
